Why God?

Our country has been devastated by two more tragic and senseless shootings. This time in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

The question so many of us ask (both unbelievers and believers alike) is “Why? Why did God allow this to happen?”

The truth is I don’t know. That’s not the answer most people expect from a pastor. I am supposed to have all of the answers. Sometimes the best answer I can give is an honest answer. I don’t know. If I had all the answers I would be God and I am not.

What I am learning to do in moments like this is not ask “Why God?”

But instead say, “This is why I need God.”

I need God to provide hope where there seems to be no hope.

I need God to bring healing to the brokenhearted.

I need God to bring peace in the midst of deep confusion.

I need God to wipe away the tears of those who are suffering.

In the moments of my life where I have suffered an unexplainable and devastating tragedy, I have learned to lean into the words of Jesus. These words have brought me comfort and guided me through some of the darkest moments of my life.

Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Tonight I pray to the One, for the ones who are suffering.
